the aryan race
the danes musta been what hitler was envisioning.... everyone here is blonde hair blue eyes with high cheek bones. its pretty weird to see. they all look like they just came from a shampoo commercial shoot. not many are what you would describe as being a "character", unlike ireland where damn near everyone is entertaining and eccentric. they all kinda toe the normal line, so to speak. you can see a huge influence of american culture and mtv-ness over here though.
i'm picking up a bit of the language but most of the time its just watching physical expressions. in some cases they have real good accents, to the point where you would mistake them for american. everyone speaks and understands english, just sometimes not my mumbled slang/reference infused english. i've been pretty laid back so far just kinda chillin in the background for the most part, seeing what everyone on the team is all about. they must think i'm a real quiet dude, but just not in a comfort zone yet. there are no tv channels in english but when shows from back home come on they have subtitles so i can see myself picking up things here and there. the grocery stores are the hardest.... i don't know what things are a good deal and even what things are sometimes. all the labeling is in danish. get this: orange juice is called appelsin juice.... i grabbed it like "oh sweet, okanagan sunrype styles" then there is a big orange on the container.... i was like "what duh" .... maybe its a blend...lol. can't find hot sauce, salsa, good spices, yogurt tubes... dammit!! there is an american style diner i guess you would describe it across the road from our place. we walked over there the other day, me and this dude from the team... i thought we were going for a burger or something... walk in.... starks for threeeee!!!! count it! the garden goes wild....... i see a three flavor slurpee machine.... lose my mind, take my shirt off, start yelling about the knicks winning the championship.... the music stops, time slows down, patrons exchange glances, burgers sizzling on the grill..... reality fades back...... smile on my face. its a welfare one... but who cares.... after expecting a year without having those delicious flavor crystals melting on my tongue, like george says "I'm back!", anyways we bought a case of beer in this joint, its weird you can buy bizarre things in bizarre places compared to back home and its regulated vending.
